Meet the Aries Team: Johanna Bourbeau, Quality Test Engineer III

Tell us a little about yourself – how long have you been working for Aries? What did you do before joining Aries?

I started with Aries in February 2013 as a Quality Assurance (QA) Engineer. Before joining Aries, I did similar work in QA at a couple of smaller companies, including at a startup. That environment was a great way to gain experience, wearing a lot of different hats to help different departments and quickly shifting priorities as needed. I went to University of New Hampshire (UNH) and majored in English and Linguistics. I enjoyed studying languages and figuring out patterns/how things worked, and that has served me well going forward in a QE path.

What have your roles at Aries been?

My current role is as a Quality Engineer (QE) on the Stark squad, one of Aries’ many agile development teams. I recently changed squads, so I have been getting up to speed on the areas that Stark supports that are different from my previous team, the Renew squad. The QE role has significantly evolved at Aries over time, from more of a manual testing role when I started to an emphasis on upskilling in automation in more recent years. I wouldn’t be able to make as much progress learning automation without the help of my fellow QEs sharing their expertise!

Tell me about your department and the people you work most closely with.

The QE group is a part of the Aries Engineering department. The QEs regularly meet to coordinate our testing efforts and collaborate as needed. For my everyday work, I collaborate with my squad on team Stark.

Describe your typical workday.

My workdays can vary depending on where we are in the release schedule. The calendar and our progress dictates if it’s time to test the squad’s work going out in the release, or whether Engineers on my squad have any new bug fixes or stories ready for me to test, as well as working on automated tests.

Tell me about some of your hobbies/interests outside of work.

As the weather gets nicer, I will probably be chasing my two kids around at the beach, as opposed to chasing them around anywhere else we go because they have a ton of energy. Someday I will get back to traveling and going to concerts as often as I’d like!
