Keeping Peer Review on Track with Automated Reviewer Reminders

It is critical for editorial processes to stay on track to ensure a smooth and efficient workflow while minimizing delays to publication. However, it is often difficult for scholarly journals to secure qualified Reviewers as many invitations go unanswered. Furthermore, Editors must also to juggle managing multiple Reviewers and their deadlines across various submissions once invitations have been accepted. This – along with the constant pursuit of Reviewers to complete their outstanding assignments on-time and correctly – can be a time-consuming and highly manual process for editorial staff, especially if conducted outside of the submission system.

To help keep Reviewers and articles on schedule, Editors can create reports within Editorial Manager® (EM) that automatically distribute reminder letters to Reviewers daily. Reminder profiles can be built against criteria set to the journal’s preferences, such as by Article Type and Reviewer workflow stages, deadlines, and roles. This flexibility allows Editors to send out reminders for outstanding invitations, upcoming due dates, past due review dates, and partially saved reviews. New automated Reviewer reminder reports can be created at any time, and settings for existing reports can be modified or deleted by the report’s owner. Aries encourages journals to tweak their letter templates and automatic reminder profiles to optimize Reviewer responses and engagement.

By alleviating the administrative burden on Editors that craft individual reminders manually, this powerful feature saves time, eases Reviewer management, and streamlines review turnaround times/time to publication.
